Homoeopathy
Before I write about healing through homoeopathy I feel that it is important to say that in most bona fide therapies it is the person with an illness that we are treating not the illness per se. It is the individual and his history that we try to understand.
It is the pathway and predisposition to illness that is the most important factor. When we understand the pathway through your family history, your stresses, your traumatic events, beliefs and behavior patterns then a therapist may then be able to devise a therapeutic package for your afflictions.
What is homoeopathy?
Homoeopathy is a system of medicine that uses mineral, plants and animal products to treat people with dispositions and manifestations of illness and disease. The medicines are given in diluted and potentised forms according to the severity of the illness and relative health or otherwise of the patient.
In essence a crude substance that can cause a sign or symptom when made into a homoeopathic medicine can cure that sign or symptom. For example, salt, can cause swelling, headaches, eye pressure, high blood pressure amongst other things. When salt is made into a homoeopathic medicine, Natrum muriaticum, it can alleviate same.
The principle of homoeopathy goes way beyond the prescription of a bottle of medicine. For instance the homoeopathic treatment for frostbite would be to apply something cold, as opposed to an allopathic application of heat. Abrupt heat on frostbite causes pain and further trauma. Initial cold application and gradually applying increasing warmth lessens the trauma and increases the potential for healing without tissue damage.
How does homoeopathy help you to give up smoking?
When a homoeopath treats a smoker that is only one of the factors examined. What is important to understand is who that person is, why they smoke and why they continue to smoke. Why that addiction and not another? Every person behaves the way they do for a reason. There are as many reasons for smoking as there are smokers. To understand that reason is half way to quitting the habit.
Homoeopathic medicines can ease the jitters, take the edge off tobacco cravings, help alleviate headaches, reduce cravings and help you hold your resolve to quit smoking. It can ease your passage through de-tox and it can help you deal with the emotional reasons for smoking. Homoeopathy cannot give up smoking for you but it can certainly help you to get to be a healthy non-smoker. Homoeopathy promotes health by increasing your ability to adapt and by removing without suppression and side effects your symptoms of dis-ease one of which is smoking.
What is the procedure? How long does it take?
There is no one way to give up an addiction, some people give up cold turkey and others gradually reduce the number of cigarettes. Many people are predisposed for many reasons towards addictive behavior and in the attempt to give up smoking will just substitute another addiction, food perhaps or alcohol. For these people a healthy addiction such as exercise is suggested as well as a general de-tox program and appropriate homoeopathic medicine.
What is the turn around time for quitting?
The process of giving up smoking could take one person 3 months and another one week. Different homoeopathic medicines are given according to need. An a-type person, with a history of irritability, work addiction, substance abuse and fastidiousness may be given the remedy Nux vomica. A talkative, sexually competitive individual may be given the remedy Lachesis. A recent widower with no reason to live could be given Naturium carbonicum. There are thousands of remedies; each has the potential to help you drop bad habits and each person takes their own time.
In general I have found that if a person has stopped smoking for 6 weeks then you can be reasonable safe in assuming that they have quit. In that time regular homoeopathic consultations and other de-tox regimes are recommended.
Can you give an example of a client who gave up after the treatment?
Joseph came to see me for shoulder pain and digestive bloating. He was 37. Joseph had a history of alcohol abuse and while he cut out the alcohol he had upped smoking to compensate. Joseph wanted to marry and his girlfriend was not a smoker.
I suggested that Joseph have Bowen treatment for his physical ailments, eat mote vegetables for his digestion and cut out wheat as I thought he had a gluten intolerance based on his history. I gave Joseph a homoeopathic remedy based his symptoms and dispositions.
When Joseph returned the next week to begin his physical treatments his bloating had disappeared and he had started spontaneously to drink a lot of water. He had cut his smoking by almost half. I adjusted Joseph’s remedy to help him to give up smoking completely. He used it daily to control a sense of crawling ants under his skin and concomitant irritability.
Joseph returned each week and by the fourth week he was not smoking and had started going to his local gym. One year later he is pain free, not smoking and aside from occasional tension felt in his belly he is symptom free. He did not marry his girlfriend. As he changed their relationship deteriorated and Joseph is now happily single.
What advice do you give to clients to assist them with quitting?
The general advice given to clients is: deal with your emotional problems appropriately, drink more water, eat regular healthy meals, avoiding snacking, exercise regularly, try to develop an ordered sleep pattern, seek the help of both a general medical practitioner and an alternative practitioner. Different people have more success with homoeopathy and others with acupuncture or some other technique. It depends on the individual.
